KIO KIO.
(Own Correspondent). A meeting of the Puketarata hall committee was held last Wednesday, in the schoolroom. After the minutes had been read and confirmed, tenders for the erection of the building were considered. That of Mr Lusky was accepted. Several accounts, including that for the timber, were passed for payment.' A further meeting is to be held shortly to decide which portion of the site is to be used for the building. Some of our Kio Kio roads have been attended to during the past fortnight. The amount of the grant was so small, however, that little if any improvement has been effected. To put only one of the bad patches in order would have required the whole of the money available, so it was decided to improve the remainder of the road by grading up the hills and fiats. The stretch from the creamery to Mr Budge’s property is now good in one or two places. The rest of the work must’ wait for a much bigger grant, which, it is anticipated, the Waitomo County Council will make shortly.
Mr Budge, who was injured by his bull some time ago, is now about again. Accidents with bulls are not very frequent, yet it seems to be tempting Providence to leave any bull in possession of his horns.
1 hanks to the recent heavy fains the pastures are again in good condition. The oat crops which had been somewhat checked by the dry weather, are now growing splendidly, so that this crop should be a fairly heavy one this season. Already the majority of the dairymen have their land prepared for the winter turnips. It seems, to judge by the area being reserved for this crop, that our local farmers have learned that’ it pays to winter the herds well in order to bring them in in good milking condition. A poorly-attended meeting was held at Hurimoana last week to discuss the establishment of a dairy factory. It soon became evident that the meeting contained supporters of both cheese and butter, but owing to the small attendance, nothing was decided, and after a more or less informal discussion, the meeting dispersed. The post office at Hurimoana (Ranganui) is to be opened within the next few weeks. , Arrangements for a mail twice a week via Kihikihi are now well in hand. The telephone is to be installed as soon as the linesmen have completed their present work. It seems that the agitation for the completion of the formation of the Tokanui-Mangaoronga Road is to have no good result. A communication has been received from the Public Works Department stating that the Department is not able to do any more to the road at prt sent. The Gane Milking Machine Co. has offered to erect and manage a butter factory on a site to be selected by the farmers. This is to be handed over when the suppliers are in a position to take it. No further particulars are available at present, but the suggestion has already met with hearty support from prospective suppliers, so that a factory should be at work in this district at an early date. In this connection it may be mentioned that Mr Barton has offered to give a chain road through/his property to one of the sites proposed for the factory. This generous gift should make carting much less difficult in Hurimoana.
