LAWN TENNIS.
A large number of people were present in Victoria Park on Wednesday to witness the first match of the season against a visiting team from Cambridge. An exciting and interesting contest took place, .Cambridge winning with a score of 9 matches 102 games against Te Awamutu’s 6 matches 94 games. Owing to the downpour of rain at 5 o’clock it was found impossible to complete the combined games, only two being played, and these scores were not included in the totals. The following is a list of the results: —
Ladies’ Singles: Mrs McCarthy 7, Miss B. McGovern I; Miss Cox 7, Miss L. Bond 4; Miss F. Cox 7, Miss K. McGovern 6; Miss L. Collins 7, Mrs Holbecke 4.
Ladies’ Doubles : Mrs McCarthy and Miss Cox 7, Misses McGovern and Bond 5; Mrs Holbeche and Miss F. Cox 7, Misses K. McGovern and L. Collins 4. Men’s Singles: Mr Cox 9, Mr Marshall 5; Mr Johns 9, Mr Roberts 6; Mr Fraser 9, Mr Parker 4, Mr North 9, Mr Isherwood 7 ; Mr Foster 9, Mr Cruickshank 7 > Mr Empson 9, Mr Holbeche 3.
