STRAWBERRY GROWING.

MOTUEKA RIVALS AUCKLAND. In past seasons Auckland strawberry growers have had a very good market in Wellington, but it would seem that they now have a serious rival in Motueka.

From inquiries made at the city markets yesterday it would appear that Motueka fruitgrowers have gone in for strawberries in a large way this season for the first time. Very large shipments of berries have been arriving by the Nelson steamers, some 320 crates having been sold locally during the week. Prices have ranged from 7d to 9d oer lb. Further consignments are due this morning. According to a well-known local auctioneer, Auckland growers will find it hard to compete in Wellington with Motueka, and the possibility is that the northern men will have to find other outlets for their fruit, or else be prepared to accept lower rates than have ruled in previous years. The Motueka berries are stated to be excellent samples, and they have the advantage of being placed on the market after only a brief sea voyage.
