TE MAWHAI.
(Own Correspondent),
Crops in this district are looking none too well, though the recent heavy showers have made a small change. A few more rainy days would bring the grass on, but in any case there will not be much of a crop of hay nothing like last season. Oats are in the same condition, and everything points to a very late harvest this season. It is very gratifying to be able to announce that a start has been made on the very bad road from the station to the Kihikihi- Otorohanga road, about 3 mi'es in length. There is to be a large cutting opposite Mr Nelson’s, about 15 feet or thereabouts, as the present grade makes it a nasty piece for horses to climb. If it is metalled right through it will be a real good road.
Many acres of new land are being ploughed, and a great difference is noticeable in the district, which will soon take its place with any of the older districts.
Settlers here cannot boast of large milking herds, but there are 9 sending cream from the station and another season should see four to five hundred cows being milked, which speaks very well for this district.
