THE 500-GUINEA DAIRY COW.
MILKING SHORTHORN RECORD. The remarkable sale of the late Mr Geo. Taylor's Cranford herd of milking Shorthorns was reported by cable a few weeks ago. A total of 181 cows, calves and heifers aggregated £17,187, averaging £B3 18s Id, while six bulls averaged £sl 9s each. The highest price was 500gns, which was paid for a seven-year-old cow. This cow, Waterloo Baroness, had a milk record of 10,1461 b from October I, 1909, to September 30, 1910; n,4oilb, October 1 to September 30, 1911; 10,2171 b, October I, 1911, to August 28, 1912. One of the London stock papers speaks of her as "a charming cow of great scale, and' with a really magnificent udder. She drew persistent and sustained bidding, being generally regarded as the best cow from a purely dairy point of view, and combin-
ing this with wonderful Shorthorn character and back breeding that was irreproachable. It was not surprising that only great persistence and long purse should obtain the mastery. The price of 500gns is the highest that has been paid in modern times for a cow of the dairy type." Her heifer calf was taken at l6ogns. Ten other cows sold from 200 to 300 gns, and 35 from 100 to igogns.
