The adjourned meeting of the Town Board will be held on Thursday next at 2 p.m. The opening of the Te Awamutu Polo Club will take place at 2 p.m. to-morrow. A start has been made with the alterations to the bowlers’ pavilion at Victoria Park. r
The whole of the imprisoned Waihi have been released on entering into bonds to keep the peace.
A proposal by the FoXton Borough Council to instal a water and drainage scheme has been shelved owing to the high interest at present ruling for money.
From later information it appears that the 225 heifers that the Government has authorised Ranger Jordan to purchase are for three improved farm settlements, namely,Korokonui, Rangitoto No. I (Ra.ngiahea), and Rangitoto No. 2 (Maihihi).
The following additions must be made to our list of local prizewinners at the Hamilton show last week : —Roadster or hackney stallions: Pony stallion under 14 hands: E. Potts’ Total (Welsh cob), first prize and champion. Draughts : Entire, four years, O. Death’s Royal Marcellus, second prize.
A meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’Union will be held in the Cosmopolitan club room at 8 p.m. on Wednesday next, when the desirability of the establishment of an A. and P. Association in Te Awamutu will be discussed. In view of the extreme importance to the district of the subject to be dealt with, the secretary hopes to see a large muster tomorrow evening.
Napier’s municipal theatre, which with the site cost £31,000, was officially opened on Tuesday night by the Amateur Operatic Society, which gave an exceptionally fine presentation of “The Greek Slave ” to a crowded house. The theatre was designed by the Hon. Mr Pitt,of Melbourne, on most modern lines, and is said to be the best in the Dominion. The decorations of the interior are strikingly beautiful and were universally admired. The seating accommodation is for fourteen hundred, while the stage is large enough to fill the requirements of any travelling company.
The average number of patients daily in the Waikato Hospital during the past month was 77, the operations totalling 17.
Work has been commenced on the new pavilion, which is being erected by the Tennis Club at the northern end of the Victoria Park.
The tennis club pavilion at Opunake was destroyed by fire on Wednesday, caused, it is believed, by a kerosene stove used for boiling water.
The Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey, M.P.) has accepted the invitation conveyed to him to attend the, Waikato Central A. and P. Association’s show at Cambridge on March 6th and 7th next.
Mr Wallace and Dr Reekie left by motor-car for Waihi at 4 a.m. this morning to interview the manager of the Waihi gold mine with reference to the suggested supply of electricity to Te Awamutu from Hora Hora.
Keen interest is being taken in the Military Sports to be held in Mr Pollard’s paddock on Wednesday, 27th inst., and all arrangements are well in hand. Competitions of all sorts will take place, full particulars of which will appear in Friday’s issue.
By advertisement to-day Mr H. Lenehan notifies that he has opened a furniture factory in a new building erected on a site opposite the Catholic Church in Alexandra Street. Mr Lenehan intends to make a speciality of the manufactine of all classes of household furniture, and guarantees the latest designs and workmanship.
Amidst a scene of the greatest excitement the Waikato bowlers succeeded in defeating the South Islanders in the tournament held at Hamilton on Friday, the grand totals being: Waikato 150, South Island 149. The',representatives of the Te Awamutu club—Messrs Brackenridge (skip), Clements, White, and Laurie —were successful in their match, scoring 22 against their opponents’ 14.
That the Philharmonic Society intends to make a success of its operetta “ Princess Chrysanthemum,” which will be produced at Te Awamutu on Wednesday, 27th inst., may be judged from the fact that no less than four rehearsals will be held this week. The scenery, which is in the capable hands of Mr O. Price Owen, will be an exceptionally strong feature of the production, and no efforts are being spared to make the performance a success. The box plan is now open at Le Sueur’s,and special arrangements have been made whereby those booking will be'sure of obtaining on the night in question the identical seats selected.
At the meeting of the Ngaruawahia Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night a letter was read from the Minister of Labour informing members that the poll taken last September in connection with the proposed change of half holiday for the shops in the town and district from Saturday to Wednesday was not valid, and that therefore effect could not be given to the result of the ballot, which was in favour of a change. It had been pointed out, however, to the chairman of the Town Board that the ordinary provisions in respect to the appointment of the day can be followed in January next, when a special meeting of the Town Board can, if so desired, fix Wednesday, which can be brought into force as from the Ist March following. Finally it was decided that delegates should wait on the Board, asking them to declare Wednesday the half- 0 holiday for the coming year.
