CORRESPONDENCE.

(Om correspondents opinions are theU own; the responsibility of editorial items makes sufficient ballast for the editor’s shoulders. It is necessary that all letters for pub- . lication should bear the name of the writer— - not necessarily fOl publication, but as evidenceof good faith J

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-In your report of the last meeting of the Town Board I notice that a Mr E„ Collins wrote .asking that the tree adjoining his property be cut down. Now, Mr Editor, were it not that there’are firewood merchants in the town it might be taken that Mr Collins wanted to provide himself with a few months' supply of firewood. He declares, however, that the tree is unsafe, and 1 am glad to see that the Board has deputed two of its members to inspect and report. I go. past the tree daily, and I have little doubt but that the . report will give the-tree, (which 1 understand to be a very rarevariety) another lease of life if only the question of safety is considered. Instead of cutting down what little we have in the way of public gardens I think it is time we got to work on some townbeautifying scheme. You yourself have had a lot to say about town beautifying, and so have a lot o,f us, I think its time we did something. 1 sincerely trust that Mr Collins’ request will not be granted, as that tree is one of the., best landmarks in the town. —*- I am, etc.,

Crusty,
