A correspondent sends us some remarks about the weather, but we do not consider them fit for publication. '

We stand corrected by Mr Crook. It, was not the lighting system that failed the night of the minstrel concert. It was only the lights that went out.

The Te. Awamutu Minstrel, Concert, and Comedy Company will appear in the Town Hall, Kihihihl, on August 14th. Proceeds are to be devoted to the hall funds.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony, in connection with the Presbyterian Church, is fixed to take place on Wednesday, August 14th. Particulars will be advertised in Friday’s issue.

The receipt of the sum of over £l3 is acknowledged by the chairman of the library committee in our columns. This sum will form a handsome addition to the painting fund for the library.

We have pleasure in announcing that Miss Rlora MacDonald’s two cocker spaniels again won prizes at the Auckland show last week. Gibson Girl was awarded three firsts and a special and Havelock Coon a first and special in brace witli Gibson Girl.

From Friday’s Order Paper we have the following : —Hon. Mr Herries to move, That Standing Order No. 219 be suspended, and that a Native Affairs Committee be appointed, consisting of fourteen members, to consider all petitions, reports, returns, and other documents relating to affairs especially affecting the native race that mav be brought before the House this session, and from time to report thereon to the House, with power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum ; the committee to consist of Messrs Bell, Can-oil, MacDonald, Mander, Ngata, Parata, Pomare, Reed, Seddon, F. H. Smith, Wilson, Young, Dr Te Rangihiroa. and the mover.

A meeting of the local branch of the N.Z. Sports Protection League is called for Thursday next at 8 o.m. in the Cosmopolitan club room.

The contractors for the new Bank of New Zealand, Messrs C. F. Hu in on and Son, have made a start with the preliminary work, and tin first load of gravel is already on the ground.

Owing to the inclemency of the weather and the consequent poor attendance at the meeting of the Young Men’s Institute last night, it was decided by those present to adjourn the same to a latter date, early notice of which will be given to those interested.

The contract for the erection of the post office tower to house the clock presented by Mr Wm. Taylor, of “Greenhill,” has been let to Messrs McKinstry, of Auckland, who will commence operations almost immediately. It is expected the structure will be completed and the clock in position before the end of the year.

In our advertisement columns will be found the first notice of the Waikato musical and elocutionary contests to be held in the Town Flail, Hamilton, from 23rd to 26th September next., The remarkable success of these contests of late years will assure the promoters of a large number of entries, and the public may look forward to a number of very enjoyable concerts. Entries close on August 31st.

The publican’s booth at the race meeting of the Waipa Jockey Club on 21st August has been taken by Mr Molesworth, of Ohaupo. The catering (lunch and afternoon tea) will be in the hands of Messrs Campbell and Martin, who, we understand, intend to set up in business in Te Awamutu shortly. Fruit and soft drinks will be supplied by Mr Heerdegen, in conjunction, with Messrs Campbell and Martin. Ladies can rest assured on this occasion of having their wants well looked after.

The new Commissioner of Crown Lands for Hawke’s Bay district expressed strong opinions at the Ormondviile land ballot with regard to his intention to put a stop to everything in the wav of dummyism or speculation. “I ■want,” lie said, “to see the bona fide settler put on the land, and I shall make it my business to see that there is nothing doubtful at all about the successful applicants/’ To prevent complications, should anything unforeseen occur, three names were drawn in each instance, so that should the successful selector be ineligible, the next name on the list could be substituted therefor, and so on.

The Railway employees on the portion of the Main Trunk Railway line between Mangaweka and Utiku are having a most anxious time in connection with slips. Fully a quarter of a mile of the line in the vicinity of the recent big slip above the Mangaweka Viaduct is threatening to come down at any moment. Ballast trains have been running regularly of late picking up the mullock as fast as it encroaches on the permanent way. Unless the weather moderates very shortly we would not be surprised to see through communication between here and Utiku suspended for some days, and if anything happens to the black tunnel, probably weeks or months, this section being the dread of the engineers.

From Friday’s order paper we have the following: —Hon. Mr Herdman to move, That'a committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to whom all local Bills shall stand referred after the first reading ; the committee to report whether the standing orders have been complied with, and to suggest such amendments as it may think proper; and to report when necessary on tile merits of the Bills ; the committee to have power to confer with any committee appointed for a similar object by the Legislative Council ; the committee to have power to call ■ for persons and papers; three to be a quorum ; the committee to consist of Messrs Brown, Buxton, Ell, Hunter, Lee, MacDonald, Nosworthy, Pearce, Young, and the mover.
