THE BACON INDUSTRY.

QUALITY OF PIGS IMPROVING.

The prevalence of disease amongst pigs was referred to at the annual meeting of the Wellington Farmers’Bacon Company. The chairman of directors, Mr J. C. Cooper, mentioned that latterly there had been a considerable improvement in the quality of pigs sent to the works, but previously a large percentage had been affected. A Mangatainoka settler instanced how the bulk of two truck loads of porkers were on one occasion found to be affected with tuberculosis. The opinion was expressed by another farmer that the producer and not the company' should bear the loss of pigs sent to the works, and which were afterwards condemned, as it would make settlers more careful and conscientious. Against this, however, it was contended that it was difficult to detect the symptoms of disease in pigs.
