PIRONGIA.
(Own Correspondent.)
Friday next promises to be a red letter day in the history of the Pirongia Mounted Rifles as the Cup'competitions are to be held on that day. Considerable interest centres in the event and given a fine day there should be a record attendance. All the events promise to be well contested. A social will be held in the evening at Which the various trophies and medals will be distributed amongst the successful competitors. The local ladies will provide refreshments and throughout the arrangements are most complete. Mr H. O. Death has kindly granted the necessary permission for the sports to be held on his property. The trophies are now on view at Messrs Goodfellow Ltd., window. A largely attended meeting held in the Town Hall to consider the advisability of purchasing a new piano for the hall was unanimous in favouring the proposal, and as a result a new instrument is to be purchased without delay. Funds are to be raised by means of subscriptions and by holding concerts. The first dance will be held on May 16th, to be followed by a concert and dance on May 24th. A plain
and fancy dress ball is being arranged for the first week in July. The new piano will be installed by the 24th inst. and will be used at the concert that evening.
At the annual meeting of householders to elect a school committe resulted as follows: — Messrs Russell, T. Steel, G. Harper, W. McCarthy, Knight, Geo. Sim and J. Sutherland, the latter gentleman being elected chairman.
