A chamber of commerce has been formed at Raglan.

* Ihe regular monthly meeting of tfce Te Awamutu Town Board vail be held on Thursday after-

“The Opposition caught us napping at last election; they will never catch us again,” —Hon Geo. Laurenson, at Stratford.

The Auckland Land Board, settling "at Opotoki. on Friday, authorised the commissioner to deal with the matter of selecting a site in the Teasdale Settlement for the local Oddfellows’ lodge.

Mr F. C. Daniell invites tenders for the erection of the new Presbyterian Church at Te Awamutu. The . building is to be erected in concrete on the corner site fronting Alexandra and Mutu Streets. Tenders close on Saturday, 27th inst.

In to-day’s advertisinn columns it will be seen that Messrs Goodfellow, Ltd., have disposed of their extensive grocery and hardware business to Messrs R. J. Ross and Co. The new proprietary comes with a good reputation for up-to-date business methods.

By advertisement to-day Messrs Andrew and Son announce that it has been found necessary to put all their chaff-cutting machinery in the out-districts, so that, unless previous arrangements are made, it will be impossible to do any cutting at the weigh-bridge for some time.

The attitude of the farmer’s union with reference to the proposed action in the event of a labor disturbance when law and order would be persevered, has been discussed considerably of late. One branch condemned the action of the executive as being in the best interests of law and order.

• A meeting of ladies is to be held this afternoon for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements for the proposed leap year dance. Present indications would seem to show ( that this proposal will be most heartily taken in hand, and that the efforts of the ladies will be liberally supported by the public.

“ That the Minister for Labour be urged to carry out the law with regard to the active instagators, aiders, and abettors in connection with the recent tramway strike in Wellington,” was the wording of a resolution passed by the Wellington Citizens’ League on Thursday evening.

We understand that Mr R. G. Blennerhassett effected a sale yesterday to two gentlemen from Hamilton and Te Kuiti of an additional 37 acres of the “ Greenmeadows ” estate. These h ighly valuable and admirably-situated building sites are being keenly sought after, and present indications seem to show that an early date will see the whole of the sections disposed of.

The Northern Mail states that a movement is afoot to establish a co-operative fruit cannery at Whangarei, and to this end fruitgrowers are making necessary preliminary arrangements. There is nothing, so far as we can see, except, of course, the necessary enthusiasm, to hinder settlers of this district following the example of Whangarei, and so making the orchards of this district a valuable, asset.

The milk suppliers’, annual sports will be held at Kihikihi on May 15th. The programmes are now issued, and the list of events shows that the committee has endeavoured to cater for all classes of sport, and it would seem that a most enjoyable outing will result. If favoured with fine weather this popular sports meeting should be well patronised, as this year’s programme comprises a wider range of events than at any former meeting. The handicaps will appear in this paper of May lOth'.

A strong presbytery committee was formed on Sunday after the 11 o’clock mass at the Te Awamutu Roman Catholic Church. The various districts of the parish were represented by the following delegates : —Messrs McGovern, D. O’Shea, De Cock, Rice, Kavanagh, Rauch, P. O’Sullivan, Ryan, and D. Moroney, Captain Hope-Johnstone, and Rev. Father Lynch. The committee decided to call tenders for building the presbytery, including stables and other outbuildings. The plans of the presbytery, by Mr J. W. Warren, Hamilton, were much-appre-ciated. It is expected that the buildings, which are to be in concrete; will be in the hands of the contractors in a month’s time.
