Murder and Suicide.
AT PARAWERA
NATIVE SHOOTS HIS WIFE AND THEN COMMITS SUICIDE.
About 5 o’clock this morning a native named Graham, residing at Parawera, shot his wife, Wiki Kuruturu, and then committed suicide. Very little of the particulars is available, but it seems that for some time there has been trouble between the deceased couple,and for the last few days a separation has been spoken of. It is thought that as. the result of an altercation ''Liiis morning- Graham fatally shot his wife. A native near by heard the explosion, and rushed to ascertain the cause of the trouble. He states that he found Graham trying to do away with himself by eating a tin of rabbit poison. What happened later is not definitely known until at about 5.30 a.m. A party burst open the door and found both the victims of the tragedy lying dead as the result of gunshot wounds. Only meagre particulars are available at the time of our going to press. The police were communicated with, and were promptly on the scene of the tragedy. Both victims are said to be full-blooded Maoris.
A fourteen-year old boy, at Whangarei, placed an iron bar across rails of the railway line, but the first passenger train cut through the obstruction, whereupon the bov made a second attempt, by placing boulders upon the bar. The linesmen were on the lookout, however, and captured the youthful miscreant, who has been sent to the Burnham industrial school.
