TAUTARI.
(Own Correspondent.) In spite of the wet, rough weather we have been having, we were favoured with a perfect day for our local school picnic. Almost all the settlers turned out and several people from Te Awamut 11, (including Dr. Henderson), Kihikihi, Cambridge, . and Parawera, favoured us with a visit. One of the principal events of the day was the baby show, Mrs W. Roigard taking first prize and Mrs McKee second ; another was the tug-of-war, married men v. single, won by the married men. The married ladies’ race was won by Mrs Bergeman, and Mrs Mathers second, about ten competing. Mr Walker won the married men’s race, Mr Saunders second. There were about sixteen children’s races, one young men’s race, and two young ladies’ races, with various games, and plenty of tea and cakes, the day passed away all too quickly. Fully 200 people wei-e present. Mr O. Price Owen took several photos, and there were two local young men with cameras taking snapshots of the races, etc. The site of the picnic, Mr Gillard’s paddock, was declared by all to be an ideal spot, and when Mr Kurth, as school manager, thanked Mr Gillard for the use of the ground, a reply was given that the settlers were welcome. To finish up the day we had a dance in the hall, and though it rained a good deal the hall was crowded, fully 50 couples being present, and all appeared to enjoy themselves. Music was supplied as usual by local talent, and there were several songs sung between the dances. Mr C. Mathers acted as M.C. We have got an assistant teacher in the school. Miss Frost arrived last Saturday, and took up her duties on Monday. Harvesting has been delayed on account of the frequent showers, and there are a lot of oats in the fields yet. The milk supply is going down gradually, which we expect it to do this time of the year.
