Handicappers: Messrs Douglas, West and Tickelpenny. Judges: Messrs Phillips and Bailey. Starter: Mr West. Stewards : Messrs Le Sueur, Battson and A. Woods. Judges baby show: Messrs Dr Gribben, Laurie and Stewart.

The uncertainty of the weather especially in the early morning, was the only drawback to the first annual trades picnic and sports at Te Awamutu. When first spoken of this event was to take the form of a builders’ picnic, but so liberal was the response that the outing became one of considerable local importance —all trades and professions combining in the function. Advantage was also taken of the day by the school committee, so that the children were treated to a day out. The officers are to be congratulated on the success of the day, and the manner in which the various events were carried out reflects the greatest credit on those responsible. In the earlier hours of the morning rain fell, and it was not until 10 a.m. that the weather showed the least sign of clearing. It was at times considered that it would be necessary to postpone the picnic until a more favourable date. This fortunately was not found necessary, and the weather lifting towards mid-day, allowed the programme to be carried out under most pleasant conditions. The attendance of district residents was somewhat lessened on account of the threatening weather in the morning. Notwithstanding, there were some 500 or 600 present. The Town Band, under Conductor Moeller, played several selections during the day, thus adding to the enjoyment of the outing. Mr Pollard’s paddock was all that could be desired as a picnic ground, and Te Awamutu is indee ? fortunate in having such an ideal spot so easy of access.
