OTOROHANGA TOWN BOARD.

(Own Correspondent.) The regular monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Town Council was held in the Council’s office on Friday night. Present: Messrs Jno. Ormsby (chairman), W. Vicary, M. Cowley, and H. J. Osmond. A notification was received from the Noxious Weeds Inspector, requesting the Council to cut the noxious weeds on the roads, particularly the esplanade.—On Mr Cowley’s motion it was decided to engage a man to cut the noxious weeds from ratepayers’

boundaries. A letter from’ Manga weka stated that reports of the Council's meetings as published in the papers showed that the Council contemplated inaugurating a night-soil service. As the writer had some years’ experience in that department he offered his services. —Mr Osmond reported that Mr Bennett, Head Office Inspector for the district, had been to Otorohanga, and in the absence of the chairman and Town Clerk, he had an interview with Mr Bennett, who strongly advised the Council to institute the pan system, and gave a lot of information as to how the Council should proceed in the matter of getting a satisfactory service. Eventually it was proposed by Mr Vicary and seconded by Mr Osmond that specifications be drawn up and tenders be invited for the removal of night-soil in patent covered pans. The matter of deciding whether the whole township should be brought into the night-soil service or only special closely-inhabited parts created a lot of discussion, which ended by Mr Vicary’s proposal being carried, to-the effect that a portion only should be subject to the sanitary by-law. A meeting of the Council be held on Friday to discuss what portion of the town be brought under the bylaw.

Mr Bowlin’s account was passed for payment. The Town Clerk presented the district electors roll for ratification of the Council. The area of the township is 185 acres, and the capital value £28,474, and amount of rates to be collected annually is £165 2s. Re loan which has been provisionally applied for. —It was decided that it would be advisable if possible to proceed with some of the works suggested by the engineer, particularly the metalling of the main streets before the summer was too far advanced, and it was decided to consult the Council’s solicitor (Mr Hosking) as to whether the Council could proceed with the matter, and if so to commence the work at once.
