OTOROHANGA TOWN COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Town Council was held on January Bth. There were present —Messrs John Ormsby (chairman), H. Osmond, M. Cowley and H. Hemara.

A letter was received from F. Whyte drawing the Council's attention to a pool of green water and stable refuse in the main street along-side a livery stable. There were several applications for the position of clerk.and it was decided to appoint Mr C.

J. Johnston clerk and collector for twelve months at a remuneration of £26.

On the proposal of Messrs Cowley and Osmond, it was decided to call for tenders for the removal of night soil in patent pans, the tenderer to qygb for

removal to ground provided by the council and alternately for removal to ground provided by the tenderer. Tenders to close on January 22nd. Mr Sims, consulting engineer to the council, presented a report for some of the more urgent requirements of the town, and stated that he would proceed with the matter and submit a comprehensive scheme after. Messrs "Osmond and Cowley proposed that the report be received and held over and that a special meeting b: convened for Monday, January 15th, to go thoroughly into the matter, and that Mr Vicary be appointed to interview the council's bankers in reference to the financial portion of the report. The following is'Mr Sims report : "As instructed by the council I herewith, present plans and estimates of the work most I urgently required—being the formation, grading and metalling of the following streets :—Ranfur'y ctreel, from the railway crossing to Maniapoto street; Maniapoto street from Ranfurly street, a distance of 32 chains; Tuhora street from the railway station to Turanga street. The plans provide for forming the streets to uniform grades and cross section with carriageway 42 feet wide, and footpaths 12 feet wide and the estimate includes metalling the carriageway feet wide by 9 inches deep "and the footpaths 10 feet wide bv 4 inches, deep. I recommend the gravel from the Waipa river be used for metalling'with the exception _of the portion o! the street whicn are subject to the most traffic, viz., portion of Tuhora and Maniapoto streets where I would suggest Te Kuiti limestone- broken to a 2/4 inch gauge be used for a width of 20 feet by a depth of 6 inches the same to be coated with 3 inches of river gravel. The estimated cost of the workis £64/. The estimate includes £463 for metalling and if the funds of the council will not permit the whole expendtiure at the present time this item could be reduced by decreasing the quantity of gravelling where perhaps at present the amount of traffic least warrants the outlay. D:a'"t specifications have been prepared and tenders called for the work almost immediately. The specifications will provide for removing tne existing crossings in Tuhora street at its intersection with Maniapoto street, and substituting open stone paved channel with easily graded approaches. It would be advisable for the council to require existing verandah pos v ts to be shifted to the outer line of the footpaths where necessary.
