CULTIVATION OF GRASSES.
NECESSITY FOR PURE SEEP.
According to Mr Primrose Vi’Connell, one of the greatest essentials in the cultivation of •grasses is the use of pure, sound, -,eed. The adulteration of/grass seeds, at one time very common, and the presence of much weedseed, has of late years become less prevalent, and .with certain precautions a good, clean, sa nple' o" : seed may be now obtained. In buying seed the purchaser shoul ! insist on a guarantee of the percentage' of' purity and germination, and make a test cf the germination on his own account. Th : s can be effectually done by placing a few seeds between clamp folds of blottingpaper, cr a flannel. As an instance of the value of this test Mr M’Conncli says that a quantity of silver-beet seed .'recently offered to the Riukura experiment station, on being tested, yielded a germination of only 5 per cent.
