KIHIKIHI.

(Own Correspondent.)

On Tuesday afternoon the Women's Christian Temperance Union met in the Presbyterian Church for the usual monthly meeting. A very pleasant and profitable hour was spent, during which Mrs Hamilton Allen, delegate appointed to represent this branch, read a report of the conference recently held in Hamilton. The President, Mrs H. Sutherland, conducted the meeting. .A Band of Hope meeting was held on Tuesday evening last. Owing to. an' accident the audience were deprived from seeing the excellent pictures, but Mr Marion, supported by the Rev. F. W. Clarke and Mr Price Owen, by their spirired oratory, did all in their power to compensate for disappointment felt. The following items were contributed : Recitations : Misses Rebe Day, Ina and Olive McCarclle, Loveday. Keam, and Lila McFlinn, and' Masters Willie McGhie, Hector Sutherland and Leslie Day. Songs by Miss Ivy McFlinn, and Miss Loveday Keam. Mrs Allen and Miss Cullen very kindly acted as accompanists. The large audience assembled warmly received the children's items, all of which were very creditably rendered. '• The wave of prosperity and progress, passing over the greater part of the Dominion, seems at last to have visited Kihikihi, although not with such force as in many more favoured localities. A commodious dwelling-house and large blacksmith's and wheelright's shop, built for MiBedford, have greatly improved the appearance of the main street. In other parts of the town, several dwellings, more .or less pretentious, have also quite recently been erected, while different residences have been enlarged and renovated. Acetylene gas plants have also been installed in the stables owned by Messrs Thomson Bros., and in the Town Hall, the handsome shades over the gas jets greatly adding to the appearance of the interior of the latter building. The Town Board have also moved in the matter of providing tennis-courts on the ground at the back of the Hall, but these, unfortunately, will not be fit for use this season, but are, however, evidence of the progressive spirit of the times.
