THE BUTTER-FAT TEST.
Another striking demonstration of the value of the butter-fat test is provided by the yields of two deep-milking shorthorns at the Weraroa Experimental Farm. One gave i2,Q301b milk with a4.l test, while the other gave 12,1221 b of milk with a 3.2 test. The respective value of the produce of the former, calculated at is per lb for butter-fat was £2B, and of the latter £l9 7s, a difference in favour of the high-tester of £8 13s. No doubt many dairy men would be glad to give both of these cows a place in their herd. The fact that two cows, which appeared to be practically of equal merit until put to the scientific test, should give such different results, once more emphasises the absolute necessity for testing in order to arrive at actual values.
