POKURU.

(Own correspondent.) On Monday evening Mr J. A. Young, the democratic liberal candidate for Waikato, addressed a meeting of settlers in the school room. Mr Pearman was voted to the chair, and in his opening remarks said they wanted a good live man as their representative who would make himself acquainted with the wants of the district, and not be afraid to speak, and vote on ail matters pertaining to its advancement, particularly the Native land question. He then introduced Mr Young. Mr Young had a good reception and spoke vigorously for an hour and a half somewhat on the lines of his Te Awamutu speech. The candidate dealt ably with the land question, his views on Native affairs meeting -with, special favour as shown by the applause of his audience. Besides tire subjects treated in his Te Awamutu speech, Mr Young had something to say about the Government in trade. He contended that the same laws which applied to regulate the conduct of private persons and corporations in business should apply to the Railway and other State Departments. For instance when farmers suffered loss by fire caused by sparks iiom Railway engines, or people were injured in other ways by any of the Government concerns, they should have the same remedies at law against the Government as against private individuals or companies. The speaker v/as frequently applauded, and at the close of bis speech answered questions. On the motion ol the chairman and seconded by Mr H. R. M. McCaiJum, the candidate v/as unanimously accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his able address, and confidence in him as their representative.
