FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE.

THE POSITION IN HOLLAND. The Director of the Live Stock and Meat Division of the Agricultural Department has been in communication with Mr Crabb, M.R.C.V.S., New Zealand Government Veterinarian in London, regarding the existence of disease amongst cattle in Holland, the object being to ascertain whether it would be justifiable to allow Holstein ca,ttle to be imported to this country from Holland. Advice has just been received that foot and mouth disease is still prevalent, and it is highly necessary that no risk should be taken in New Zealand. So far as the existence of the disease in Great Britain is concerned, the Board of Agriculture enforces strict quarantine in the districts in which the outbreaks occur, allowing no movement of sheep or cattle out of them. Consequently, says the "Journal of the Department of Agriculture," existing precautions are sufficient so far as the introduction of the disease from England is concerned at present. At the same ..time the New Zealand Government officers in London are keeping a close watch over the matter, and steps will be taken should it become necessary for any additional precaution. The cases of foot and mouth disease in Holland were distributed over a large portion of the country. In February last 505 cases occurred, in March 138, and in April 330.
