GARDEN PARTY.
On Wednesday afternoon the garden plarty in connection with St. John’s Ladies’ Guild, was held at the residence of Mr* E. I. Miller. As the day wore on the weather became very threatening until at about 3 p.m. one or two showers fell, but in spite of the unfavourable weather conditions there were fully 100 present, many of whom had journeyed from the outlying districts. It was at first considered that a further postponement would be necessary owing to the serious illness of Mr Matheson, who resided in that neighbourhood, and a rumour to this effect accounted for the non-attendance of a very considerable number, although this rumour was groundless. ' It was, however, considered advisable to request the Town Band not to play, and the programme as arranged upon was suspended. Quite a gloom hung over all present as Mr Matheson was highly esteemed, and naturally the enjoyment of the afternoon was to a certain extent marred. But in spite of the totally unexpected trend of events which so disorganised the arrangements an enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs K. I. Miller as hostess was considerate for the thorough entertainment of the guests. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, and was greatly appreciated. The many dresses of the ladies were both fashionable and charming. The . grounds at “ Heworth ” were in excellent order, and the whole presented a very pretty appearance, which only required a fine day to appear to full advantage.
A quantity of material was donated towards the organ fund, and the committee expressed the highest appreciation of the liberal response to their appeal for funds.
