DISTRICT NEWS.
mmimiL (Own Correspondent.) It is always pleasing to hear of the success of any of our fellowcolonists (or should it be Dominionists? But when that success is attained by one of our “ own boys ” a still greater interest is attached thereto. In the Otago Daily Times, dated September 2ist,‘ is mentioned the fact that Mr H. Mandeno, architect of Dunedin, has succeeded in winning the first prize of £l5O offered by the Dunedin Tech- 1 nical School managers for the best design for a suitable building for the new King Edward Technical School. In considering the plans entered for the competition, the chairman of the committee called attention to the fact that it said a good deal for Dunedin architects that ten designs should have been received, so that it would be easily seen that Mr H. Mandeno’s win was no fluke, but a straight-out win against strong competition. It will not be necessary to inform the “old hands” of the district that the said Mr Harry Mandeno is none other than our own Harry (son of Mr J. H. Mandeno, Faircroft, Hairini), and formerly a Te Awamutu school boy. All old friends will therefore be pleased to congratulate our old friend Harry on the great success he has made of his profession. '' The following from the paper referred to speaks for itselfMr Mandeno ii practically’a young man, but has nevertheless had a good deal of experience of practical building work in Dunedin, and then served three years vfith Mr P. Y. Wales, and for a similar term was in the service of Mr E. Anscombe. It is only within the last two months that he (Mr Mandeno) has started in business on his'own account, and it is no little distinction to have achieved such success within that short • period.” It might be mentioned -that amongst the Mr Anscombe, Mr Mandetio’s late employer, and this again is a big feather in the winner’s cap. Mr H. Mandeno will also super--vise the erection of the KingV Edward Technical School. Well done, Harry ! Yet another dance—the last of the series (at least so the management say) will take place in the Hairini “Town” Hall on Wednesday evening next, fwhen it is hoped there will be a'record at~‘tendance, thus making a grand finale to the very manv pleasant • evenings passed during the * winter-months.
