PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY DANCE.
——— What will certainly be remembered as one of the most enjoyable dances held at Te Awamutu during _ the present season was the plain, fancy, and masquerade dance held on Wednesday in connection with the local Philharmonic Society. Therey was a very good attendance, which is unquestionable evidence of the popularity of the Society. This is the first dance the Society has arranged, it having hitherto came before the public only on the occasion of the regular concerts. The hall was prettily and artistically decorated. Streamers of -flags with greenery about the walls formed a very pleasing background, and with the high colouring of the many fancy costumes and the many charming dresses of the ladies presented a very pretty appearance. The supper room was well provided with dainties and spoke for The hospitality of the local ladies.' The decorations of both table and walls were in keeping with the artistic nature of the main hall. Dancing was commenced at about 8.30 p.m. with about 80 couple on the floor, and from the outset was carried out with a swing that could only be the result of systematic organisation. The prizes for the best fancy costumes were awarded to Miss B. Alexander (Cleopatra) and Mr M. S. Laurie (Courtier). Of the other fancy costumes we noticed Misses F. Rickit (Sunflower), C. Kirkham (Folly), O. Middlebrook (Pierette), A. Alexander (Ireland), M. Lee (Girl of the Period), K. Hudner (Mavourneen), McGivern (Gipsy Fortune Teller), Watson (Night), Clement (Sorceress), Young (Powder and Patches), F. Mandeno (Faith, Hope, and Charity), McGee (Colonial Milk Maid), Armitage (Dutch Girl), F. Clarke (D.I.C. Harem Skirt), Lees (Sailor), Macken (Patches and Powder), Mrs Birch (Gipsy), Messrs A. Mclntyre (Topsy), E. Moeller (IVlephistopheles), W. Davis (Uncle Sam), J. Peterson (Aley Sloper),Waters (Naval Officer), J. Laurie (Cricketer), Hodgson Jack Johnson), A. Wrigley (Sporting Review). The M.’sC. for the evening were Messrs J. H. An sell, C. W. Rickit, F. J. Gilbert, G. Galloway, and A. G. Warburton.
A strong committee consisting of Society members made all the necessary preliminary arrangements, and, together with the help received,'from many quarters, greatest praise is due to them for the satisfactory result. The.next announcement of the Society will be awaited and welcomed by many.
