It was in 1902 that NoLicense was carried in Ashburton. This year an excellent booklet is sent out under the heading, "Ashburton under Nolicense." From this we cull the following facts and figures: — Total population, 1911... 14,985Capital value for County, Borough and Suburbs of Hampstead and Tinwald £7,270,259. These figures represent £498 l6s per head of population. Out of a population of 14,985 on May 31st, 1911; there were only seventeen persons receiving Charitable Aid. The consumption of liquor per head is shown as follows: — WINE AND BEER SPIRITS. GALS. GALS. Dominion 18.00 ... 1.71 Ashburton 2.47 ... .76 Or nearly 16 gallons per head less of beer, and nearly one gallon less per head of wine and spirits. Convictions for Drunkenness. 1902—-" Under License ... 11 1910 —Under No-License ... cl Of the 61 convictions fj 1910, no less than 35 wer, persons who were either arrested on arrival o. trains, or who procured the liquor outside the Ashburton No-license area.
