The ball was kicked off by Pirongia, and play was very exciting for the first few minutes, but Tuhikaramea soon had Pirongia on the defensive. A. W. Jones altered the play by carrying the ball to mid-field. The game then went to Tuhikaramea's 25, where Pirongia were given a free kick, which was taken by Pleke and resulted in a goal.
