TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD

The regular monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the office of the Board on Thursday, July 13th at 2.30 p.m. There were present: Messrs Bowden (chairman), White, Wallace, and Mathews.

OVERDUE RATESj^-* Mr J. B. Teasdale waited upon the Board and explained his position regarding rates which had been charged to him for certain sections of the Teasdale Settlement, at the same time stating that his name had been placed on the roll in error. He was willing to pay for the time he was in possession, and asked that the balance be charged to the occupiers.—It was decided to act in accordance with his wishes. SECTION ADJOINING TOWN HALL Rev. Woollass and Mr W. F. Stewart, as repi-esentatives of the School Committee, waited upon the Board to request that permission be given to fence in and use the section adjoining the Town Hall as a school playground. They proposed to have a 10 foot gateway so as to permit vehicular traffic to and from the supper room. It was decided to grant the request subject to the right of the Board to resume possession on 3 months' notice. It was pointed out to this deputation that a complaint had been made to the Board that the School Committee was neglecting to keep the flag pole in a good state of repair. The deputation stated they would see the necessary work was done. TOWN HALL ACCOMMODATION.

It was stated that there is need for better accommodation in the Town Hall, which could be remedied by purchasing a number of chairs. Quotations were, submitted. It was ultimately decided that the Board would purchase chairs to the value of £3O, at the same time accepting the offer of Mrs Taylor and Mr Warburton to assist in the purchase by arranging a series of concerts.

BAND ROTUNDA. Mr Edgecumbe waited on the Board regarding the proposed Band Rotunda to be erected in Victoria Park. —After some discussion it was decided to issue subscription lists in order to raise the necessary amount to erect the building, and so secure the Coronation subsidy.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.. Mr Warburton stated that at the' request of several citizens he had booked the Town Hall for Wednesday evening next, when a meeting of all interested would be held. —The Board promised to be present as a body, and to assist in furthering the proposal.

PIANO STOOL. It was decided to purchase from Mr F. J. Gilbert a new piano stool.

CLAIM.

Mr Swarbrick advised the Board as to their position respecting the claim of J. Bathurst for a refund of hotel license fees paid. —It was decided not to recognise the claim for £3O.

CROSSINGS. It was reported that the material was at hand, and as soon as weather permitted, the work would be done. SANITARY.

It was reported that the by-laws were being objected to by some, and the Health Inspector is to be instructed to take the necessary steps. RATE. A general rate of %d in the £ was struck for the current year. MANGAHOE BRIDGE.

This bridge has been reported not worth repairing, and a conference of local bodies interested is to be held at Ohaupo on 25th July, when a proposal to erect a concrete bridge will be considered, and the proportions of cost appropriated. Messrs Bowden and Wallace were appointed delegates to this conference. , LATE MR P. O'CONNOR.

It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs O'Connor and family on the occasion of their recent bereavement.

STATION VERANDAH.

The Hon. Geo. Fowlds fori* warded a letter from the Railway Department stating than an inspection had been made, and the proposal would receive immediate attention.

TEASDALE SETTLEMENT ROADS.

Two letters were received from the Lands Department stating that in response to the deputation which waited upon the Hon. Geo. Fowlds recently a grant had been made of £2OO for Teasdale Settlement roads, and that the amount was now available. It was decided to prepare plans as soon as possible.

■'djti TOWN RESERVES, It was decided to deal with certain reserves as soon as the titles are available. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr D. M. Christian wrote requesting that a footpath be formed down Market Street. —It - was decided to form a temporary path pending a decision regarding definite.levels. Mr J. L. wrote complaining of the obstruction in % Walton Street, and complained of the neglect shown by the school committee to keep the flag pole in order. —The latter complaint was placed in the hands of the school committee. It was decided to ask Mr Collins to see that the purchasers of his old office remove same as soon as possible. In response to a request, leave was given to Messrs McLean and Son to stack certain timber on the side of the road while the building on Bank Street corner is being erected. Messrs Nightingale and Co. wrote offering six street lamps ,f_or £47. —Received. It was reported that 1432 yards of sand had been taken from the pit on Mr J. Pollard's property, and payment of royalty at 3d per yard was authorised. A notice was>eceived condemning the old building in Church Street, which notice is to be handed to the trustees in the estate of Mrs Edwards. Mr Swarbrick forwarded the deeds for completion respecting the closing of Redoubt Srreet It was decided to affix the Board's ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment: —Geo. Clark £3O 13s sd, J. Jackson £3 15s, M. S. Laurie £2 is Bd, Argus £i 13s, Goodfellow, Ltd., lis, C.T. Rickit -T£6ns3d, Waipa Post £i 12s 6d, Souter £2 19s 6d, Geo.,Clarke £2 17's 3d, half year's interest on Puniu bridge loan £5 8s 6d, Bygrave, (sanitary account) £l2, Bygravf £l2 IDs (approx.), H. Andrew 8s lid.
