DAIRY EXPERT FOR LONDON.
\ GOVERNMENT SENDING MR GWILLIAM.
Following upon the decision of Cabinet to appoint Mr W. E. Gwilliam as the New Zealand representative to watch the country’s dairy produce interests in England, some particulars of his career may be of interest. For ten years, up to 1892, Mr Gwilliam gained business' experience in Tooley street, London. He came to New Zealand and started in the dairy industry at the Edendale dairy factory, Southland, in September, 1892. He was there for two seasons, and was taught cheese and buttermaking by the then manager, the late Mr Thomas Scoular. From 1894-5 he was manager of Messrs Henry Reynolds and Co.’s factory at Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. From 1895-9 he managed Mr George Chirnside’s cheese and butter factory at Werribee Park, Victoria. He returned to New Zealand in 1899, and for a season was with, the Fresh Food and Ice Co., Wellington, as butter-maker. From 1900 to 1907 he was manager of the Eltham' Co-operative Dairy Factory, Taranaki. In October, 1907, he joined the Government service. He visited England in 1898 and in 1906, on the last occasion via the United States and Canada. Mr Gwilliam joined the State service in October, 1907, and is at present the chief grader at Wellington. He has also acted as an instructor in the service.
Mr Gwilliam’s headquarters will be in London, but his duties will extend to the West of England ports.
