NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL REPORT.
The seventeenth annual meeting of the National Dairy Association of New Zealand, Ltd., will be held at Palmerston North on June 20 —the opening day of the National Dairy Show. Mr A. M’ Farlane (Pahiatua) will preside. The secretary (Mr J. G. Harkness) Avho is now on his return from a visit to England), is expected to read a paper covering the information gathered during his travels.
The annual report to be presented at the meeting congratulates members upon the increasing usefulness and prosperity of the association. The report continues : “ The actual turnover for the year amounts to £183,521 6s 2d outside the consignment of dairy produce. The indenting of supplies has largely increased, and orders on our books for delivery during next season are more than double the quantity handled by the association in any previous year. Your executive takes this opportunity of thanking the factories who have loyally supported the association in this respect. You will be asked to consider the question of providing increased capital to allow of this business being still further increased. The balance standing to the credit of profit and loss is £1504 os 6d, a net profit for the year, of £307 2s iod. The membership has increased during the year from 113 to 137, an increase of 22 members for the year. Two members of your executive visited Auckland last September, and met delegates from the Auckland factories, who unanimously agreed to support your Association on condition that an office be opened in Auckland and that Auckland be regresented by two members on the executive: Messrs A. C. Hubbard, of the Thames Valley Dairy Company, and W. Spragg, of the New Zealand Dairy Association, were nominated to the Mr Spragg, owing to pressure of business, has since resigned, and his place has been filled by Mr T. Bassett, of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company. An office has been opened in Auckland, and a resident representative appointed. The office is being much appreciated, and it is hoped that all Auckland factories will avail themselves of this advantage.
“ Thirty-five factories availed themselves of the cheaper rate of marine insurance through your association. The total value of the produce insured for those factories was £479,590. The rate charged was from 3s to 4s per cent cheaper than was being paid by factories insuring outside the association. Taking an average of 3s per cent a saving of £719 17s,was effected by the above thirty-five factories. Your executive urges all members to take advantage of insuring through the association, either in connection with produce shipped or cover required on factory buildings and plant. Factories may takeadvantage of the marine insurance irrespective of the firm to whom their produce is consigned, and it is hoped that the number of factories taking advantage of the cheaper rate will be largely increased during the coming season. .
“ Complaints in connection with our chees& have been conspicuous by their absence. Mr J. G. Harkness was granted six months’-leave of absence in December, and has visited Londorf and other centres. The address which he will deliver at the conference in Palmerston should be full of interest. The Wellington Meat Export Company was approached at the beginning of the season with a view to securing a reduction in the charge made for freezing butter at Wellington port, with a result that for the present season factories have only been paying 5%d per box instead of 6d. As the Meat Export Company pays all'wharfage and other charges between the store and the steamer, the prices compare favourably with charges made at other ports.
