MANGAPIKO.

(Own Correspondent.)

The question, “Is the hobble skirt better than the harem ?” was discussed in the Mangapiko school room under the auspices of the Mangapiko Debating' Society on Friday, June 2nd, the affirmative being championed by Messrs Jary and W. Alexander, and negatived by Messrs C. Alexander and H. Meyer. One of the speakers, attired in a gaudy harem skirt, was the source of much merriment. After several of the assembly had expressed their views on the subject the vote was in favour of the harem skirt. An auxiliary debate “Is the pen mightier than the sword ?” followed, the pen being defended by Messrs Johnstone and Meyer and negatived by Messrs Alexander. The vote of the audience was given in favour of the sword. In spite of the nnpropitious weather a large gathering filled the room. Next debate “What I would do if I were Prime Minister” will be held on June 16th.
