WAIHI UNDER NOLICENSE.
A rather striking evidence as to the truth or otherwise of the statement that under No-license a much greater quantity of liquor is drank in the homes of the people than is the case under License, was furnished the other day in Waihi. Mr Johnson, engineer of the Grand Junction Mine, was talking at crib time with a group of some twenty-five or thirty of the miners, many of whom were drinkers, previous to No-license. Mr Johnson said to the men: “ Let us test the statement made by Magistrate Day. He says there is liquor in nearly every home. How many of you have drink in your homes since NoLicense ?” The men looked
at one another, but not a
single one of the whole , group was found to have liquor in the house. This evidence is conclusive, and these men agreed that, as
regards Waihi, Magistrate Day’s statement was entirely wrong.
A meeting of ladies was held in the Kihl Kihi Presterian Church on Tuesday last, when it was decided to form a branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. After addresses had been given on the subject of organisation by Mrs Auld, President of the Hamilton Branch, Miss McNeish, organiser, and Mr Woollass, of Te Awamutu, officers were elected, Mrs Hector Sutherland being chosen President, Mrs Woollass Vice-Presi-dent, Miss Ashby secretary, and a roll of members was formed. It was decided to arrange a plan of work, and meetings will be held monthly. Votes of thanks to the visitors brought the meeting to a close.
