DISTRICT NEWS.

KIHIKIHI.

(Own Correspondent.)

A meeting of ratepayers’ called to consider the question of the proposed loan for road improvements, was not attended by sufficient numbers on Wednesday evening to permit of the business being proceeded with. The meeting was, therefore adjourned until Monday afternoon next at 3 o’clock, when it is hoped that sufficient ratepayers will attend to enable a decision on the matter to be arrived at. The weekly meeting of the Literary and Debating Society will be held on Tuesday evening next, when the programme will take the form of contributions of readings, etc., from various authors. Members are requested to bring with them short readings from their favourite writers.

The committee charged with the arrangement of the Coronation Day festivities met last Monday evening and initiated a comprehensive and varied programme. A subscription list was opened, which Mr W. H. Grace pleaded with a generous donation of £5, beside which he has made an equally beneficent offer to the Maoris towards their own share of the festivities.
