The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. TUESDAY, MAY 9, 1911. TE AWAMUTU FIRE BRIGADE.

WHERE is it? At present we must admit that it is amongst those nebulous things of the future that we read about, but do not see. At the same time, we are pertectly certain that unless something is done and done soon, we shall wake up one morning when it is too late, bemoaning our apathy and indifference. The danger of fire is an everpresent evil, and while it is the duty of the Town Board to take up this matter and do something -definite with it, yet no one expects the Town Board to move far ahead of public opinion. While we give them credit for being, in certain respects, a progressive body, yet their business, so far as they are able, is to carry out the wishes of the ratepayers; and when they receive a mandate, they will take action. In a town assuming the proportions that ours is, we should most certainly take some steps to get two things, first a good water supply, and secondly, a Fire Brigade. It will be urged that to do so will cost money. Certainly, we do not expect anything for nothing in this mundane sphere, but if we are to develop our township, get good buildings erected —and we are glad to know so many are going to be built, it goes without saying that those who are putting their capital into these enterprises, want to see some reasonable security for it. And we believe that if the matter was carefully gone into by those in authority, we might easily have, what we have suffered so much, for the lack of this summer —a good supply of water; and then there would be no difficulty in getting a Fire Brigade. And we are of the opinion that these things may be had without such a great outlay of money. At all events, the cost would be amply repaid in the great convenience and comfort of a water supply, and the greater security and protection of property. This is a question which must be dealt with in the near future. Just recently two of our citizens have suffered very heavily in losing their homes, and these instances will no doubt be multiplied. We would suggest that the practical men on our Town Board go thoroughly into the question, and let the ratepayers know what it will cost to give them a water service. If the cost should be prohibitive, which we do not for a moment believe would be the case, then our local authorities would not have any blame resting upon them. The matter is well within the region of our local politics, and we hope to see it dealt with in a practical way very shortly.
