SIR WALTER CARNCROSS DIES.
LONG PARLIAMENTARY RECORD. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last night. The death of Sir Walter Carncross, aged 85, a former Speaker of the Legislative Council, occurred at his home at Eltham this morning after a brief illness. He leaves a widow, Lady Carncross, one daughter (Miss S. Carncross, and one son (Claude Carncross), all of Eltham. (Sir Walter Carncross was born at Bendigo, Victoria, in 1855, and was educated in New Zealand. He was a member of the House of Representatives for Taieri from 1890 until 1902, when he retired. For some time he had been Whip to the Seddon Government. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1903, was chairman of committees! from 1910 until 1912,
and was elected Speaker in 1918. He was knighted in 1922. In the days of the volunteers Sir Walter Carncross was an enthusiastic officer, serving as a captain in the Taieri Rifles. In 1918 he was one of the four delegates sent to England at the instance of the Empire Parliamentary Association. He was for many years editor and proprietor of the “Eltham Argus”).
