YOUNG MAN DROWNED

AT CLIVE BOAT SWAMPED. HASTINGS, Last night. Left floundering in the water when their rowing boat swamped and sank at the mouth of the Ngaruroro river at one o’clock this afternoon, two men gained foothold on a sandy bar before they were swept seaward on the outgoing tide. One was drowned. The other swam ashore 300 yards from the river mouth, and lay exhausted on the beach for two and ahalf hours before he was discovered. The victim was ALLAN GORDON CUSHING, aged 25, of Clive. His companion was RAY GORDINE, aged 27, who swam ashore. Cushing and Gordine had intended going outside the Ngaruroro to fish. Gordine rowed down the river from Clive and handed the oars to Cushing at the mouth for him to take the boat outside. A few minutes later two big waves struck the boat head-on and swamped it. It sank immediately.
