PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES THREE CENTURIES. Two Plunket Shield cricket matches were commenced on Saturday, Wellington playing Otago at Wellington, and Auckland meeting Canterbury at Christchurch. Wellington registered a straightout win against Otago. Batting first the Empire City team compiled 409, Ongley beii for 110 and Rainbird ( 1 ■ ipearance in big cricket) 102. Otago were all dismissed in their first innings IW-IIN. Mills (37) and Elmes (23) being top scorers. Pritchard to els for 32. In their >eeond strike Otago made 16T, the hi'jlie- ‘ scorers being Elmes 40, Knight 29, Leader 24. Ashenden captured six wickets for 44. Wellington thus won by an innings and 130 runs. A TOUGH STRUGGLE. The match between Canterbury and Auckland L producing a grim struggle. Batting fir-1, Canterburv compiled 254 (Hadlee 92, Roberts 57). Auckland siarted remarkably well, the three top men making 102, but the tail failed to wag. However, the team managed to beat Canterbury'- e< < runs. Wallace made 105. At stumps yesterday Canterbury had lost six wi 1 1 - for il7 runs, and were fighting hard to put up a score that would re-ult in a draw.
