SMEDLEY CADETS

THIS YEAR’S APPOINTMENTS. Mr F. AY. Browne, District Public Trustee for Napier, advises that twenty-nine applications were recently received for two-year cadetships at Smedley Station, Tikokino, and after consideration by the Howard Estate Advisory Board, the Hon. the Minister of Agriculture lias now approved of cadetships being offered to the following:— L. G. Ayres, Dannevirke. lan Harvey, AVairoa. R. B. Hughes, Dannevirke. J. A. Norris, AA’aipukurau. R. M. Nichol, Bay A’iew. P. M. Pegram, Napier. The Board was impressed with the type of youth applying for admission to Smedley Station, and the keen interest which is being shown among youths in farming pursuits. The examination conducted by officers of the Department of Agriculture for cadets who have completed their two-year course of training, resulted as follows: — AA r . H. Hartree 92* per cent. A. J. Price 82 „ „ I. R. Ileays 64* „ „ G. M. Buchanan 52* „ „ A. Hislop 43* „ „ M. R. Nilson 33 „ „ The field instructor, in submitting the examination results, advised the Board of his satisfaction with the excellent papers done by the cadets generally. Those of the two leading cadets were stated to lie outstanding. The Board decided to award the R. J. Douglas medal to Cadet AA 7 . H. Hartree, who secured first place in the Departmental examination. The Hon. the Minister has approved of' two-year scholarships at Massey Agricultural College being offered to Cadets Hartree and Price, both of whom have accepted the offer and will take up work at Massey College next year. The past season at Smedley has been a very wet one, probably the worst experienced for many years. The stock, however, wintered fairly well, 2063 lambs being docked, giving a percentage of 74.37, which, in view of the prevailing conditions, is considered satisfactory. A total of 113 acres have been sown ill oats and ehoumoellier and there seems every prospect of a good crop. Contracts have been let for the erection of a Dutch barn and milking shed. During the year, the cadets have been fully employed in all phases of farming activities which, combined with the lectures by officers of the Department of Agrictulture, have meant a very busy year, and the progress made by all the lads on the Station gives the Board great satisfaction.
