Arrangements are well in hand for the Fire Brigade ball, which takes place in the Municipal Theatre on Friday evening, and no effort is being spared to make this year’s function as popular as those of the past. The Benedicts’ Ball held in the Onga Onga Hall last Wednesday evening was an outstanding success, the attendance being large and everyone apparently spending a most enjoyable time. The committee provided many novelties, and the scene was one of gay abandon. Excellent music was provided by Karaitiana’s Lazy Swing Band, and extras were contributed by Mrs Meta. “We cannot tell, really, what modernism is going to lead to,” said Mr Felix Swinstead, F.R.A.M., speaking to members of the Wellington branch of the British Music Society. “There is no doubt there are earnest musicians writing music at the present day that will become the classics of the future. Of course, you have got to be dead first.” (Laughter). Beethoven was hated for a long- time, said Mr Swinstead, and so was Wagner, and even Chopin’s harmonies were thought at the period to be crude and rough,

At a meeting of the general committee votes of thanks were recorded to Mr Henderson for placing his paddocks at the disposal of the club, to all those who lent teams for outside ploughmen, and for the lorries which carted the material to and from the ground, also to the ladies who attended the evening social and decorated the hall. A special vote of thanks and appreciation was accorded to the judges, stewards and competitors, who did their job excellently under very trying conditions. The decrease in net revenue from £903,858 in 1937 to £632,797 in 1938 is attributed by the General Manager of Railways, Mr G. H. Mackley, in his annual report, to an increase in working expenses, amounting to £442,196 on account of the operation of the 40-hour week for a full year, and to other salary and wages concessions granted to the staff. Increased wages, the cost of handling the substantial increase in business, the increased price and consumption of coal, stores and other materials, and the cost of providing improved stockloading, yard-lighting and other facilities at stations amounted . to £672,400 —making an aggregate increase in working expenses of £1,114,596, he states.

The committee has been working untiringly to see that everything is in readiness for the entertainment of patrons, who, after the laudatory comments which were made on last year’s function, need have no fear that they will not be properly looked after. For those who prefer it, bridge has been arranged, while the delightful savoury supper will be a revelation to all. A special scheme of decorations has been prepared, and this will add to the attractiveness of the ballroom, while the music for dancing will be provided by Lew Munro’s orchestra, and the programme has been arranged to suit all tastes.
