GARDEN FETE

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT “ABBOTSFORD.” A garden fete organised by the Waipawa branch of the National Party was held on the “Abbotsford” grounds on Satnrday afternoon, and, despite the vagaries of the weather, was most successful and enjoyable. Visitors were present from all parts of the district —Porangahau, Hatuma, Pourerere, Omakere, Pukehou, Takapan, Tikokino, Argyll, Onga Onga, and Waipukurau—and they entered whole-heartedly into the spirit of the function. After Mr Broadfoot, member for Waitomo, had addressed the large assemblage on the front lawn (reported in another column) the crowd dispersed to partake of afternoon tea and participate in the various competitions organised by the promoters. Considerable credit for the complete nature of the arrangements is due to the Waipawa Women’s Auxiliary (of which Miss D. E. Jull is president), with the co-operation of the Onga Onga, Otane, Omakere, and Tikokino branches, and to the honorary secretary, Miss E. Pellow. STALLHOLDERS. The various stalls and competitions were in charge of the following:— Cake stall. —Otane Women’s Auxiliary Branch (Mrs J. Clark, president, Mrs Germaine, secretary). Sweets stall.—Onga Onga Branch (Mrs Gray and Miss M. Masters in charge). Produce stall.—Omakere and Coast (Mrs Wallace in charge). Meat stall.—Omakere and Coast (Mr R. B. Nation). Quoits. —Messrs A. W. Jull and Eric White. Darts.—Tui Bibby. Clock golf.—Miss V. Witherow. Tea.—Mrs Riddles and many helpers. COMPETITION WINNERS. leed cake (Otane branch). —Mrs W. I. Limbrick. Mystery Box (Taununu and Omakere). —Mrs R. E. Bishop. Chocolates (Onga branch). —Miss Audrey Gregory 1, Mrs McLeay 2. Box of chocolates (Waipawa).— Mr N. J. McKay. Clock golf.—Mr Allan. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs H. M. Rathbone for placing her grounds at the disposal of the committee.
