CLOSING DOWN

- THAMES GAS COMPANY. THAMES, Last night. The Thames Gas Company, Limited, which had been in operation in Thames practically since the opening of the goldfield, has closed its works. The company has gone into liquidation chiefly as the result of the impossibility of renewing the mains and tho gasometer. It' is understood that the pipes throughout the town are much corroded owing to the mineral in the soil, and that also with the raising of the streets in recent years they are buried

too deeply to he worth renewing. The gasometer is very badly corroded and only holds about one-third of its original capacity. Users o'f gas have, since the notification two months ago, been busy installing other means of heating. The price of electricity, which has fallen during the last two years, has helped to make the demand for gas lighter. Other people are installing bottle gas and having their stoves converted to meet the new requirements.
