The text of the message to Ihe Governor-General is as 1 allows: “The Catholics of New Zealand, the bishops, priests and people now solemnly commemorating in Auckland the beginnings of the Catholic faith in this country one hundred years ago, ask your Majesty to accept th(> expression of their deep loya!tv and respect and the assurance of their prayers for the happiness of vour Majesty and her Majesty the Queen. —James M. The relative liability of motor cycles, rental cars and taxis to accident injury is clearly shown by the latest figures taken out by mv Department,” said the Minister of Iransport, the Hon. R. Semple, when commenting on the graph from the figures, published above. “Rental cars and taxis in the past 10 months have averaged approximately six accidents for every million miles, compared with an average ot 3.5 accidents for private ears 2.1 for commercial vehicles, and, safest of all, 1.2 for buses and service cars. On the mileage run, however, motor cyclists are easily the most liable to accident, having a rate of 11.2 accidents for every million miles. On an average, one in every nine taxis and one in eveiy 12 rental cars has had an accident during the last 10 months. The Road Safety Council, at its recent meeting, passed a recommendation that unless the motor cycle rate showed an improvement in the three months before the next meeting, consideration be given at that meeting to the advisability of fixing a special speed limit for motor cycles. The Council was also ol! opinion that special attention should he paid to the enforcement of traffic regulations in the case of taxis. “It was suggested during the discussion that the question of revoking tax? drivers’ licenses for serious breaches of the regulations should also be considered. With a view to securing better control the rental car problem is to be specially investigated by my Department.”
