CARNIVAL DAY AT TIKOKINO

WHEELBARROW DERBY AND FOOTBALL MATCH.

[Own Correspondent], Tikokino on Saturday afternoon let itself go in an effort to raise funds for the local candidate in the Rugby Sub-union queen election. Miss M. Roach. The first event was a Wheelbarrow Derby, which provided no little excitement, The course was from the post-office corner to the hotel, and the various participants were loudly eheered on the way. The result was as follows: —W. Barrett and Miss I. Kilmers, 1; Hoy Simmonds and Mrs J. Parkinson, 2; .J. Ellmers and Miss G. Pedersen, 3. Tiiis was followed by a football match, Married v Single, which created a great deal of interest, and resulted in a win for Married by eight points to six. The Benedicts attacked strongly from the word go, and Bill Collins was nearly over from a fiveyards scrum. Shortly afterwards a nice passing rush, in which Woods, Rood, Meissner and Dunn participated, enabled the last-named to score a neat try, which Rood converted with a magnificent kick from the sideline. Up and down play followed, and eventually Morrison went over to score for the Bachelors. French failed with the kick. This reverse stirred up the married men and they initiated a strong attack, a fine passing rush, in which the ball was handled by Lowes, Wood, Meissner, Dunn and Rood, finishing with a try between the posts by Rood, but he failed to add the extra points. In the second spell the single men made a great effort to make up the leeway, and French dummied his way through the opposition and touched down between the posts, but he missed with the kick. The remainder of the game was evenly contested, no further score being' registered. Mr S. Harvey, of Smedley, was in charge of the game, and gave the players a considerable amount of latitude.
