THE SALES TAX
NO ALTERATION IN VIEW. WELLINGTON, This day. The removal of anomalies in the administration of the sales tax was sought by Mr F. Jones (Lab., Dunedin South) in an urgent question to the Minister of Finance, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in the House of Representatives yesterday. He asked whether the Government would introduce legislation for the purpose this session. The Dunedin master tailors complained, he said, that they had repeatedly drawn the attention of the Government to various anomalies, but so far without result. The Minister stated in reply that it was not proposed to make any amendments to the sales tax legislation this session, as it was considered that the existing law was adequate. The position of the bespoke tailoring trade had been receiving careful consideration, and he hoped that the matter would be satisfactorily finalised at an early date. At a meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce it was resolved, on the motion of Mr A. C. Holms, “That this general meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce strongly condemns the continuation of the sales tax as a means of raising revenue for the reasons: (1) That the tax aimed at has been more than achieved; (2) that the cost of collection is out of all proportion to the tax collected; (3) that it is inconsistent in its application.”
