REPtiST Or IXZ ENGINEER ON THE MONTH’S OPERATIONS. At to-day's meeting of the Waipawa County Council the engineer, Mr V. Douglas, submitted the following repoit on general operations lor the month WAIPAWA RIDING. Thi grader worked on riding road: or 8 I-Bth days, and 11 7/lCths labor .lays were spent in general maintennee. Seven and a-quarter days were spent on the Argyll water-race. ONGA ONGA HIDING. The grader worked in riding roads for IX { days, and 191 days were spent in general maintenance. Blake’s drain, Runtanhvha, was cleaned during the month, and cat ’lc stops were erected as instructed on the Limeworks hill, Waipawa-Onga Onga road and at the Tuki Tttki river. Road classification signs were erected on the Fernhill-Takapau main highway near Tikokino and nt the Hawke’s 13av l)OU>ub"y \ eonimeneenient was made with the painting of bridge po-ts in main highvavs. CLINTON RIDING. The grader worked on riding roads for 1 l/10th days, md 18 l/Bth labor days were spent in general maintenance. Patching was carried out on the Makaretu-Ashley Clinton road, particularly through Severinsen ’« cutting. This road requires ra-metallir,g for a distance of about two miles. Two second-hand stringers were inserted in Anderson’s bridge, Makaretu. A road classification sign was erected in the Fernhill-Takapau road at St. Hill’s. Eight labor days were spent on general maintenance on Mill road, and a start has been made in laying culverts. TAKAPAU RIDING. The grader wotked on riding roads for 1 1 /Kith days, and 4 3,/lfith labor days were spent in general maintenance. Three hundred and fifty cubic yards of metal were spread on the Fernhill-Takapau road from the crushing plant at the Tuki Tuki river. The Ranigtoto culvert approaches were damaged by rain, and were repaired and the wingwalls extended with timber. Noxious weeds were removed from metal dumps. MAIN BRIDGES. Report on Timber Bridges.—All timber bridges north of the Tuki Tuki river were inspected and a detailed report is submitted separately. Pendle Hill Suspension Bridge.— The approaches on the side of this bridge were raised an average of 2J l'eet. Wilson’s Cutting Bridge Approaches. —A good deal of subsidence took place due to rain, and 43 cubic yards of filling were put in. A timber fence was erected along one wing wall. Milne’s Bridge.—lt was found on more detailed examination that the proposals submitted to last meeting were not feasible. The position has been re-eonsidered and fresh proposals prepared which are now placed before the Council. Butler’s Bridge.—Plans and specifications were eompiled and submitted to the P.W.D. Approval was obiainei* and terrtets have been called 'or this meeting. Hansen's Bridge.—Tenders hav Ten called for this meeting. T- o-milc Creek Bridge. Te Aute Section: The reconstruction of one half-mile of this road is proceeding. During the month 1740 squate yards - ere completed. Ai" u,cements have now ’ aen made with Messrs Preston, Ltd., for the supply of 200 cubic yards of limestone rock from the Onga-Tiko timeworks at 4s per cubic yard delivered on to the road, (b) Waipukurau Section: Chips were brushed on to the road and the grader spent 1 1.16 th days in grading up the edges, (e) Takapau Section: Fortyeight chains of sealing were completed during the month, and reconstructed portions were sealed by day labor. The contractor shifted on to the Waipukurau section during the month but is now back again on the County section. The crusher worked 15 hours per day during the month, Due to various causes such as rain, trouble with contractors’ machines and trouble with the County’s plant the output was not as good as last month. The following is the amount of material crushed during the month: Crushed river shingle 939 cubic yards, lilt, metal 891 cubic yards, fin. chips 324 cubic yards, fin. chips 124 J ’cubic yards. As there appears to be a possibility of shortage of lin. metal, a contract has been made with Mr Andrews for the supply of 300 yards of lin. metal at 6s 9d per cubic yard. Metal below fin. to be also paid for by the County at the same rate. My intention is that when sufficient lin. metal is in view for the Takapau township sealing, to divert the balance across the river lor the Onga tonwnship sealing, next year. Fernhill-Takapau Main Highway.— The grader worked on this road for 7 7/16th days, and 2 l/Bth labor days

were spent in general maintenance. Waipawa-Pourerere Main Highway. —The grader worked for 2 l/Btli days on tliis highway. Waipawa-Tikokino Main Highway. —The grader worked on this highway for 5 5/Bth days during the month. Waipawa-Onga Onga Main Highway. —Grading was carried out for 8 1/lfith days during the month. Waipnkurau-Matamau Main Highway.—Grading was carried out for 1 7/Bth days, and 1 3/Bth labor days were spent on patching. Takapau Saleyards and Takapau West Main Highways.-—The grader worked for one day on each highway. TOOLS AND PLANT. As instructed by the Council, tenders were called to; a new 21 cubic yard tip lorry. These were considered by the chairman and myself, anil t; was decided to prrehase a Leyland ul; ioriy. A still further portion of the roller tyre has broken off. GENERAL. Chaff.—The supplies of chaff have become exhausted and it is necessary that further supplies be obtained immediately. Order P.ooks.—A new system of oiders for the purchase of goods and services has been instituted, thus enabling the engineer to check all purchases. A sample order book is submitted. Waipawa Riding'.—Post and rail wings to be erected on the eastern end of the Brow bridge. Onga Riding.—Engineer and riding members to deal with necessary improvements to the entrance to the Onga saleyards. Drain near Glenny’s on the Onga road to he cleaned out. Clinton" Riding.—Tenders to be called for GOO yards of metalling. Takapau Riding.—Action in auth--orising the metalling of the FairfieldTakapau road confirmed. Mr Hunt to be requested to cut down trees obstructing the view on the road, and Mr Kerr to be requested to remove trees lying near the road. Several corners on the Otawhao road to be cut back. Bridges.—Proposals for Milne’s bridge approved and tenders to be called. Plans to be prepared for Two-mile Creek bridge. Main Highways.—Chairman’s action in arranging with Preston, Ltd., for the supply of limestone was confirmed, also for the supply of crushed metal by Mr Andrews. General. —Chairman authorised to purchase 20 tons of chaff.
