BLAZE AT BURNSIDE
FELLMONGERY GUTTED. DUNEDIN, Last night. A Are caused serious damage to the fellmongery of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company at Burnside yesterday morning, the large two-storied brick building being- practically gutted and most of the contents destroyed. W lien the fire brigade arrived the file had a strong hold and it was found impossible to save the building or the machinery. The extent of the damage was not able to be estimated, but it is obvious that it will run into some thousands ot pounds. The blaze was a spectacular one, flames shooting high into the air and soon attracting a large crowd of spectators. Men were working in the building till midnight, but the cause of the outbreak, which was first discovered at about 2 o’clock yesterday morning, is not known. The four walls of the building were left standing after the fire, but the interior presented a sorry spectacle, with twisted masses of ironwork, badly-damaged machinery, and destroyed skins. A number of heaps of skins were still intact on the ground floor, and it is thought that some of these may be salvaged.
