At the Taranaki meeting yesterday Carfex, starting at 5/4, Avon the Cup, with Peter Jackson (1/2) second and Alloy (6/6) third. A rank outsider in Lalla Quex (7/8) won the Okato Hack, paying a nice dividend. Three favorites, Star Artist, Royal Routine, and Diagone, were successful in catching the judge’s eye. Threatening weather affected the attendance and the totalisator turnover, the latter showing a slight decrease on that of last year. The popular choice, Vintage, Avon the Dunedin Cup, with Ventrac (4/4) second and Bold Brigand (12/12) third. There were some big surprises at Dunedin. In the Trial the winner, Tizzy, was a 9/8 chance, and Osculate, third, 12/12. Norman Conquest, who finished second in the : Berwick Handicap, started at 10/5, and Shock, third, 13/14. Palmary, winner of the President’s Handicap, started at 12.5. The totalisator receipts at Dunedin Avere £-1000 down on last year. The consistent Slippery registered another Avin at Poverty Bay, in the Turanga Stakes, being second favorite. Bad weather and small fields affected the returns very considerably at Gisborne, the totalisator being over £7OO down. There will be racing at Dunedin, New Plymouth and Gisborne again to-morrow. “It might be his last race to-day; his legs are not too sound, and it is doubtful whether he will stand much further training and racing,” remarked M. J. Carroll, as Paganelli went out to contest the Waharoa Handicap at Matamata. Paganelli is now in his tenth year, and, although he is carrying a bright and healthy appearance, he is a long Avay below the horse. he used to be a few seasons ago.
