FLOODS IN AMERICA
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HOMELESS. THIRTEEN DEATHS. SEATTLE, December 25. Thirteen deaths are reported in the floods covering parts of the States of Washington, Oregon and Idaho and British Columbia. Thousands are homeless. Fifteen towns have been inundated and scores are isolated by high water. Relief is being organised, but broken railway communications are retarding efforts at succour. There is a ray of hope in the weather forecast of lower temperatures, which would stem the floods through freezing. , Earlier messages stated that the lowlands of the State of Washington laced the most critical dangers as tile result of floods, which have menaced tlw locality for a week. Approximately 5(100 have been rendered homeless, while millions ol‘ dollars’ worth of property have been damaged. I i] tually all highways are blocked niid dozens ol' small communities are completely isolated. Tacoma, a city of 125,000 persons, is expected hourly to he marooned. Aberdeen, with a population of 22900, is inundated. The people are 1 earful of a typhoid epidemic. Meanwhile a steady downpour of rain continues. Many earth slides are harassing communities at the base of mountains.
