The retrial at Auckland of Nurse Elspeth Kerr on three charges of administering poison ended on Friday night, when the jury disagreed after a retirement of five and aquarter hours. During the hearing of a ease at Auckland in connection with the sale of a dairy farm at Waimauku, it was stated by counsel that plaintiff had missed a whole season because defendant had failed to give him title to the property as agreed. “What has your client lost by not being in possession of the farm ? ” inquired Mr Justice Herdman of counsel. “In view of the present condition of dairy farming he has probably been saved money. ’ ’

Another reduction of a halfpenny a. pound in the wholesale prices of butter has been decided on by the Butter Merchants’ Association (says the “Dominion”). The highest grades will now retail at 9d a pound, with lower grades correspondingly cheaper. Wholesale firms will pay a pound with a discount of a halfpenny on payment within fourteen days. The new reduction will come into operation immediately. A similar reduction of a halfpenny took place last Monday. The test cricket match between England and New Zealand being played at Eden Park, Auckland, will no doubt bring back memories of other “Test” games, and possibly there are “Diggers” who remember the occasion when the troops were marking time in Egypt and the “Tommies” issued a challenge to the Aussie 1 ‘ Diggers” to meet them at cricket. The challenge was readily taken up, and, to the chagrin of the English side, they were all out for four, three runs and a bye. The man who skittled the wickets was Albert Cotter, one of the most famous of Australia’s bowlers before the war, and finding the middle stump when pitching to men who knew little or nothing about cricket was no trouble at all to him.

The district electors’ roll for the Borough elections closed on the 19th of last month. No provision is made in the Act for a supplementary roll for the smaller boroughs. Two Chief Justices of New Zealand have sat at the desks of Thomdon School, which celebrated its diamond jubilee on Saturday, Sir Michael Myers, who occupies the senior position on the New Zealand bench, and was the principal speaker at Saturday’s celebrations, was a pupil of the school in 1880, when it wag in Sydney street. The late Sir Charles Skerrett, whom Sir Michael succeeded as Chief Justice, was a pupil. The late Mr YVilliam Mowbray there took an important part in the earlier training of two boys who were to attain the supreme judiciary post of their country. Edwards, Ltd.* A shop front in Onehunga was severely damaged as the result of an empty limousine taxi crashing into it. The vehicle was waiting to take a bride to her wedding, shortly after 2 o’clock, when it suddenly moved backwards from a steep part of the road, while the driver was delivering flowers for the bride (states the “Auckland Star”). Crossing the street, it crashed into the shop, and then continued along the side of the house to which the shop is attached, and came to rest against the kitchen. Crockery, pots and pans, and bottles of jam were scattered in all directions. The wall of the house also was damaged, but the car, protected by the rear bumper, escaped almost unscathed. As there was still half an hour before the wedding ceremony, another ear was obtained, and the bride did not know of the accident.
