SALE OF CAR

ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. COURT SEQUEL TO A HASTINGS FIRE. NAPIER, Last night. The hearing was completed at the Magistrate’s Court to-day of the charges against William Ebenezer Hyslop, of Hastings, managing director of the Tourist Motor Company, Ltd., John Young Hannay, of Napier, salesman, and Leonard Ralston Wyllie, late of Napier, service driver, of attempting to obtain money by false pretences from the United Insurance Co., Ltd.

The charges against Wyllie and Hannay were dismissed, while Hyslop, who pleaded not guilty in all cases, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, The three accused were charged jointly, as follows: —“On or about November, 12th, 1931, at Hastings, with intent to defraud, they did attempt to obtain from the United Insurance Company, Ltd., the sum of £llOO by means of false pretence, to wit, when making a claim on the said insurance company for insurance on a Studebaker nine-seater car which was destroyed by fire at Hastings on October 23rd, 1931, they did falsely represent to the insurance company the selling price and value of the ear.” After hearing the evidence brought by the Prosecutor in connection with the above charge, the accused Hyslop was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Napier, on his plea of not guilty. The Bench considered that there was not sufficient evidence to so commit Hannay and Wyllie, and these two accused were discharged.
