The bye-election for the Hutt seat will take place on Wednesday next. The general impression is that on a split vote Mr Nash, the Labor candidate, will he elected.

During the month of November 2,107,500 gallons of water was pumped by the waterworks plant, an increase of 80,500 gallons as compared with the return for November of last vea r.

The annual gas statement presented lo the Borough Council at the monthly meeting showed that of the total amount of gas manufactured during the year 180,500 cubic feet was unaccounted for, representing (Li per cent. The. Mayor (Mr Hunt) said the percentage was very low, as engineers usually allowed for about 10 per rent, leakage.

The loss of the operation of the railways during the four weeks which ended on November 9th was £23,518. In the corresponding period last year there was a working- profit of £39,853. The net revenue in the 32 weeks of
this financial year has amounted to £244,728, against £440,120 in the corresponding period last year. Gross revenue has increased slightly, but expenses have increased very considerably.
